The African king Jugurtha is shown before his captor, the Roman general Gaius Marius. The procession was held on January 1, 104 B.C. Date: 1725-29.This painting is from a series of ten magnificent canvases painted to decorate the main room of Ca' Dolfin, Venice. The battle has been tentatively identified as the great victory of Gaius Marius over the fierce Teutonic tribes in Lombardy in 101 B.C. The tribe of the Cimbri had crossed the Alps near Trent and invaded the Veneto, whose mild climate and delicacies reputedly sapped their strength. Their defeat saved Rome from conquest. He brought a nervous energy to his drawings, which he often produced in long, thematic series. This is one of many drawings that he made of angels and putti. Over the course of the series, whose full extent has never been counted, he showed the weightless, winged figures in free-floating poses. They appear to have been made simply for his own enjoyment, an outlet for his energy and imagination.

Saint Roch sacrificed his own health in the service of others: he lifts his robe to reveal a plague spot on his thigh. Stricken with the plague, he retreated to the wilderness, where he survived on bread brought by his faithful dog.
